Small businesses are the heartbeat of Rhode Island’s economy, but securing the capital needed to grow, hire, and innovate can sometimes feel like climbing an uphill battle.
That battle just got a lot easier.
We are thrilled to announce that RI Capital has been officially awarded $13 million in federal funding to launch and expand our State Small Business Credit Initiative (SSBCI) Loan Participation Program. This massive injection of capital is designed to do one thing: unlock opportunity for Rhode Island entrepreneurs who need it most.
Here is what this funding means for our community, our economy, and your business.
What is the SSBCI Loan Participation Program?
The State Small Business Credit Initiative (SSBCI) is a federal program aimed at strengthening state programs that support private financing for small businesses.
Through the Loan Participation Program (LPP), RI Capital doesn’t just lend money directly—we partner with local financial institutions (like community banks and credit unions) to co-fund loans.
How it works: If a business needs a $500,000 loan to expand, but a local bank can only comfortably approve $250,000 due to stricter lending criteria, RI Capital can step in and buy a "participation" in the remaining $250,000 using our SSBCI funds.
By sharing the risk with traditional lenders, we make it significantly easier for small businesses to get approved for the capital they need.
Key Benefits for Rhode Island Small Businesses
This $13 million allocation isn't just a win for us; it’s a game-changer for local business owners. Here is how this program levels the playing field:
- Access to Larger Loans: Businesses can secure higher loan amounts than a single bank might typically allow.
- Lower Risk for Lenders, Better Terms for You: Because RI Capital mitigates the lender's risk, businesses often enjoy more flexible underwriting standards and competitive interest rates.
- Bridging the Collateral Gap: If your business has strong cash flow but lacks the hard collateral usually required by big banks, this program helps bridge that gap.
- Focus on Equity: A significant portion of these funds is dedicated to supporting businesses owned by socially and economically disadvantaged individuals (SEDI), ensuring equitable economic growth across the state.
Fueling Rhode Island’s Economic Future
"This $13 million award is a monumental milestone for RI Capital, but more importantly, it's a lifeline for the state’s entrepreneurial ecosystem," says [Insert Name/Title, e.g., Jane Doe, Executive Director of RI Capital]. "With these funds, we are empowering local lenders to say 'yes' more often, fueling job creation, and ensuring that Rhode Island remains a vibrant place to start and grow a business."
Whether it's a neighborhood bakery looking to buy a second location, a tech startup hiring its first engineering team, or a local manufacturer upgrading its machinery—this funding will ripple through every corner of our state's economy.
